Prayer and contemplation can access the deepest aspect of our will to radically change our lives and transform the world –the deeper the contemplation the more profoundly we can be stirred to meaningful action.

Using as a springboard a beautiful six line prayer which can be repeated like a mantra, James O’Dea lifts us into page after page of pristine and poetic contemplative reflections that illuminate our understanding of the nature of the soul’s long awakening journey; the forces which open the heart and enlighten consciousness; the understandings and actions which dissolve wounds, bring healing and secure lasting peace. What unfolds is a framework of unparalleled clarity integrating sacred practice, wisdom teachings, science and conscious activism.
Each set of poetic reflections concludes with a short essay by outstanding spiritual leaders and thinkers: Barbara Marx Hubbard on soul awakening; Anodea Judith on heart opening; Ervin Laszlo on light shining; Michael Singer on wounds dissolving and Hopi elder Mona Polacca on peace radiating.

I have often said that prayer is the broom that sweeps out our hearts. Soul Awakening Practice presents reflections that will assist you to further develop or continue in your prayer practice. With this prayerful cleaning of our heart, it is possible for us to receive the true gift--peace. When we are in pieces, that's what we share with the world but when we are in peace, we manifest peace, we exude peace and we spread peace.

H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji

The need for cooperation and partnership as opposed to domination and dominion is becoming more and more evident in these threshold times. Many are calling for peace in our times and James O’Dea makes the case that peace calls for dynamic engagement. It requires the building of trust that allows love to flow so that compassionate connection can interrupt the cycles of wounding. Soul Awakening Practice is a handbook that reveals a path forward as it skillfully guides us to an awakening of the heart to the full expression of peace. I highly recommend this book which offers grounded practices that will be a revolution in your daily life.

The Conscious Activist

An extraordinary and rousing manifesto from award-winning author James O’Dea, The Conscious Activist is both a compelling narrative and a deep reflection on the demands of mystical realization and effective activism. Throughout the book, O’Dea poses that an integration of the two has the power to permanently transform the social order and to wake up humanity from its course of rapid self-destruction.

Divided into two parts, Part I offers parallel narratives of author James O’Dea’s training and spiritual development as both a mystic and an activist. The mystic, he explains, must move past petty ego concerns in order to experience oneness with each other and our divine source. The activist, on the other hand, explores the role of passion and conscience in activating social change.

In Part II, O’Dea pursues this fascinating concept of a meeting ground between the two worlds, where spirituality and action unite to spark an accelerated transition towards our greater goal: a more evolved civilization. He asks us all to become conscious activists – to learn, collectively, how to move beyond our rigid conformity to beliefs of the past and its archaic structures of power and control.

Cultivating Peace

This profound guidebook reframes and expands the mission of building a global culture of peace. Going far beyond conventional techniques of conflict resolution, James O'Dea provides a holistic approach to peace work, covering its oft-ignored cultural, spiritual, and scientific dimensions while providing guidance suitable even for those who have never considered themselves peacebuilders.

O'Dea is unique in his ability to integrate personal experience in the world's violent conflict zones with insights gathered from decades of work in social healing, human rights advocacy, and consciousness studies.

Following in the footsteps of Gandhi and King, O'Dea keeps the dream of peace alive by teaching us how to dissolve old wounds and reconcile our differences. He strikes deep chords of optimism even as he shows us how to face the heart of darkness in conflict situations. His soulful but practical voice speaks universally to peace activists, mediators, negotiators, psychologists, educators, businesspeople, and clergy--and to everyday citizens.

Acclaim for Cultivating Peace

Jean Houston, founder of the field of Social Artistry

"This is one of the most important and profound books of our time. In luminous prose, the great visionary activist James O’Dea communicates the ideals and practices of peace in ways that summon a spiritual and social evolution. At once both tough and tender, this masterpiece is the finest map I know to the transformation of self and civilization. If you read only one book this year, this is it!”

Mark Gerzon, author of Leading Through Conflict and Global Citizens

“This marvelous book has the potential to grow peacebuilding to the point that every school, every business, and every community incorporates these principles. James O’Dea's life experience and skillful writing make peacebuilding personal and accessible. He shows us that ‘cultivating peace’ is not just what UN diplomats or professional mediators do. It’s a vital part of each of our lives.”

Abdul Aziz Said, International Peace and Conflict Resolution Program

“O’Dea liberates our imagination about peace; his insights enrich the field of conflict transformation.”

Deepak Chopra, author of Peace Is the Way

“This brilliant manifesto weaves science, spirituality, and social healing into a practical peace roadmap for us all.”

Professor Michael Nagler, cofounder of the Peace and Conflict Studies

“The peace movement, and what Kenneth Boulding called the much broader ‘movement toward peace’ in human consciousness, has long been fragmented, without a compelling and unifying narrative—and therefore is much less effective as a cause than is implied by the power of the truths it contains. James O’Dea’s book is an important contribution toward the articulation of that narrative, especially bringing out the many inner components of peacebuilding—the only place from which peace can really come.”

Lynne Twist, author of The Soul of Money, Pachamama Alliance

“James O'Dea is a modern-day prophet who has journeyed further than anyone I know in search of the ways of peace. He is both a consummate scholar and an unwavering activist whose lifework has been in service of a peaceful world. In his brilliant new book, Cultivating Peace, he tells the real and deep truth about what peace really is and what it takes to bring it forth in today’s troubled world. This book is O’Dea’s long-awaited magnum opus, a wise and unprecedented guide to the social healing that our world urgently needs now.”

Lynne McTaggart, author of The Intention Experiment and The Bond

“This superbly written and seminal guide to peacemaking by the brilliant and visionary James O’Dea reveals a profound truth: peacemaking is a two-way, transformational process that begins in our own hearts. Cultivating Peace is so packed full of nuggets of wisdom for both self-transformation and spiritual activism that it should come with a warning: read this book only when you’re prepared to heal yourself and everyone around you.”

Ervin Laszlo, renowned systems theorist and founder of Global Shift University

“James O’Dea is indubitably one of the most evolved souls on this planet. He can advise others on how to become a global peace ambassador because he is one himself. The spread of his message worldwide is one of the key preconditions of creating a peaceful transformation worldwide—and in time.”

Duane Elgin, author of Voluntary Simplicity, The Living Universe

“Don’t dismiss James O’Dea as a simple zealot for peace. Instead, he is a sophisticated ambassador for a new humanity and world system. Cultivating Peace is a wise and warmhearted book that is seasoned by years of firsthand experience in the reality of human conflict. O’Dea invites us to change our collective story, awaken to a global consciousness, and envision the great work of deep reconciliation as the foundation for a promising future.”

Barbara Marx Hubbard, author of Conscious Evolution

“James O’Dea penetrates to the soul level where the source of love lives. By recognizing and loving that universal essence of being within us, no matter who we are, he reveals and heals the violence. He provides us with a path that each of us can follow to heal ourselves and the world. I find that every moment I spend with him is precious and brings peace to my soul.”
